Houses | mudgee

Our design strategy for this residence aimed to create a highly sustainable and cost-effective solution capable of withstanding Mudgee’s challenging seasonal climate extremes. The result is a tranquil and sheltered environment for the client.

The materials, textures and massing were designed to reflect the colours and topography of the riverside location as well as to create sympathetic scaling relationships with the neighbouring houses, including the adjacent “Heaton Lodge” which is a significant heritage building in Mudgee.

Strategies adopted in the design include: steel framing, heated floor slab, natural ventilation, daylighting, solar protection, PV sourced renewable grid connected energy, large capacity rainwater storage and reticulation, microclimate landscaping, and low maintenance and long life building fabric. The pavilions boast a streamlined profile, engineered to withstand Mudgee’s occasional extreme winds. Elevating the verandah roofs above the pavilion eaves allows for refreshing summer breezes while reducing turbulence. Vertical and horizontal batten screens were designed to facilitate vortex shedding, a design feature that proved its effectiveness during a severe wind storm.
