Changxing Green Urban Community, a 60 km2 city represents a new model of urban growth for new and existing cities that provides a solution for governments, under pressure to provide economic development and growth, while minimising the loss of valuable agricultural land. The model for the innovation is a reorganisation of land into environmental corridors, “landscape muscle” allowing a balanced community growth. The design is based upon providing a flexible and adaptive design to respond to the rapidly changing urban lifestyle and technological advances.
The urban layout provides a legible and clear response to each functional need. The pattern language of the urban fabric is woven into the environmental connections. A series of ecological muscles connect the mountain to the water, integrating urban and environmental functions throughout the site. They hold the urban fabric of the site as a muscular landscape, allowing the flow of critical elements over the site into the surrounding community and as a connective tissue throughout the site.
A series of commercial hubs are contained and structured by this muscular landscape. These hubs form the focus of a variety of communities, each having its own functions and purpose forming walkable neighbourhoods connected by an efficient transport network. At the centre of the site is the main city centre, which acts as the main focus for the new city serving the central needs of all functions on the site.
